| Video Dance Lesson: The Cha Cha || The Cha Cha is a cheeky, lively and flirtatious dance. There are five distinctive foot movements that are danced in 4 beats, giving it it's recognisable "One, Two, Cha Cha Cha". |
-Triple Steps (Chassez)
- Rock steps
-Cuban motion (hip movement resulting from the alternating bending and straightening of the knees)
- Synchronised dance movement as the dancers work in parallel to each other
- The New Yorker is another move characteristic of this dance, where one dancer steps across their partner and then checks to change direction.
| Video Dance Lesson: The Foxtrot || The Foxtrot is a dance that was created as a result of an act that an actor named Harry Fox did. Dancers began copying his act and they called it Fox's Trot. It is referred to as the Rolls Royce of the standard dances due to it's smooth style with continuous forward and backward movements. It's timing is "slow- quick-quick-slow".|
Distinctive Moves :
- The Weave.. Six quick steps in a row ( all done on the toes)
- The Feather Step... When the man steps outside the girl
- Zigzag patterns that the dancers create on the dance-floor.
|Video Dance Lesson: The Jive || The Jive has it's roots in New York's Harlem, and derives influences from Boogie, Rock'n Roll, Swing and the Lindyhop. It is fast, rhythmical and swinging with lots of kicks, flicks and twirling of the woman. The feet and knees remain under the body and the knees should be close together.|
- The basic moves are right and left Chassez's,and rock steps where the weight is changed from one foot to the other.
- The "flick-ball-change" movements.
- The kicks are distinctive because the toes are always pointed to the floor during the kick.
- The American Spin (the man lets go of his partner allowing her to spin on her own.
|Video Dance Lesson: The Paso Doble || The Paso Doble is dramatic and should make us think of bull fighting. This dance favors the man as the Matador, with the woman's role varying from his cape, to the bull, to reflections of the Matador himself. Aspects of the dance include marching-like steps, and cape-like movements.|
- Chassez Cape, where the man uses the woman as a cape to bring her around.
- The Apel, where the man stamps his foot. These movements are meant to be strong.
- Strong Flamenco influences as noted in the arm and hand movements.
| Video Dance Lesson: The Quickstep || The Quickstep was born out of the 1920's when the Foxtrot was played too fast. It evolved over time with a faster pace and added other elements like the Chareston. It is light, fast paced, and springy with tricky foot work. The flow is "slow-quick-quick-slow-quick-quick", with slow moves on the heel and the quick moves on the toe.|
- A fast paced up and down swing motion.
- Powerful movements while seeming light footed
- The partners, while dancing quickly, require a high degree of synchronization, with the same tension in the feet and legs.
-Lots of work on the balls of the feet and spring from the feet.
-Runs (quick little repetitive movements)
- This dance requires more floorcraft than any other of the ballroom dances.
| Video Dance Lesson: The Rumba || The Rumba, considered the most sensual of the Latin dances, tells a story of love and seduction. The woman uses her charms to try to conquer her male partner with teasing and withdrawal.|
- Romance and interplay between the partners.
- Hip action produced by transferring weight from one foot to the other.
- Figure-eight hip rolls.
- Stylist body shapes with constant changes.
- Swiveling foot action and straightening of the legs.
- The walk steps are strong and direct.
- The dancers are on the balls of their feet at all times with no heel leads.
- The Cucharacha step- rocking to the right or left, then replace and close.
- The Fan position - the woman is at arms length to the man's side and at 90 degrees to him.
|Video Dance Lesson: The Samba || The Samba originates from the Brazil's Rio Carnival and incorporates many South American dances. It is rhythmical with lots of hip action and has a party flavor. It consists of walking and side by side steps and has a vertical bounce action. The steps are usually done on the ball of the foot.|
- The Volta is the basic step with a crossing action in front of the body.
- The Sambe Roll- rolling action from the waist up.
- The Botafogo- a travelling walk with change of direction from right to left or left to right.
- Outstretched arms.
- A good balance of both moving and stationary steps.
- It ends with the throwing back of the head and splaying the arms to the side.
|Video Dance Lesson: The Tango || The Tango has it's origins in Argentina where the gauchos (cowboys) would go to town dances after a work day without cleaning themselves up. Their chaps would be stiff with the sweat from the horse, so they walked with slightly flexed knees, and the ladies would dance with heads turned away because of the gauchos "odor".|
- Emotional with lots of clipped movements.
- Staccato movements with sharp head turns and stops.
- The hold has the man's left arm more at head level and the couple is much tighter.
- Walks are done with heel leads.
- Rock turns (the couple rocks while turning).
| Video Dance Lesson: The Waltz || The Waltz has it's origins in 17th century Germany and is considered the mother of present day dances. It consists of walking and side steps with distinctive rise-and-fall and body-sway movements that make it beautiful and elegant. In the American Smooth form of the dance the hold can be broken to perform more open movements.|
- Waltz Pendulum movement...up and down swing with spatial movement.
- Lots of rotation.
| Video Dance Lesson: The Salsa || The Salsa has evolved from Latin and Afro-Caribbean influences. It has a pattern of six steps danced over 8 counts of music. Important features of the dance are side-to-side movements and turns.|
- Forward Basic movement and Back Basic movement.
- The female performs her steps to compliment the man's. ie. when he does a Forward Basic move, she does a Back Basic move.
- Hip movement is accomplished by transferring weight from one foot to the other.
